A Mark II model of the Community Cooker was first constructed in 2011 to address the challenges experienced from the Mark I in Kibera, Silanga. After much needed research and design the Mark V was later build in 2015. The Planning Cooker is used for research and development on challenges experienced on other cookers and for testing new ideas that may improve the Cooker’s efficiency.
Research became necessary after we have built our first prototype, mostly research solutions to challenges that we were being experienced. After the first prototype a need for Research and Development cooker was realized.
A Research and Development Cooker was built at PLANNING House that was also to serve as a kitchen for the office too. This Cooker is pulled apart and put back together often to allow for new ideas to be tried and tested and their value addition to the technology established.
LONG TERM IMPACT
Research and Development has enabled Community Cooker Foundation grow the technology used to burn rubbish to generate heat energy. This technology has further been tested to establish how steam can be used to generate electricity and hot air can be harnessed for crop drying. These and many more are being tested to add value to the Community Cooker.
SOURCE OF RUBBISH
Rubbish is collected from within the office, residential neighbors and a supermarket on Lower Kabete road.
